Meet our Master Instructor

I started my Taekwon-Do ITF journey February 1986, and opened my first studio in 1988 when I was almost 17 years old. This journey had an amazing Impact on my own life and I have seen the positive Impact that the Martial Arts can have in any person’s life over and over again, irrespective of age, gender, social status, race or ideology.

I have traveled the world to better myself, training, competing, coaching, growing and increasing not only my knowledge of this amazing Martial Art but to open my mind to the possibilities life has to offer.

The Martial Arts taught me many disciplines, especially to be able to think forward, to understand the responsibility of decision making, and to live life by the consequences of my thoughts and actions, positive and negative, to embrace the good with the tough times, for it is in adversity where we find the most growth.

I have shared the life skills I have learned in my journey to Master the Martial Arts with thousands of people who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction as well as to the corporate environment, sales executives and leadership groups. My definite purpose in life is to leave people better than how I found them, to go on a journey with them and to see them grow, this is what gives me the most joy in life, this is what the Martial Arts allowed me to become.

I invite you to journey with us, walk beside us on this path of introspection, of wisdom and eternal pursuit of self mastery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Taekwon-Do is a modern Martial Art that is known for its arsenal of impressive and effective kicking techniques, along with a wide array of foot, hand, elbow, and knee strikes or blocks. It exercises and strengthens the entire body and also improves cardiovascular fitness. Board breaking, patterns, and sparring are facets of the training. TKD is also known to build character through the practice of its five tenets: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control and Indomitable Spirit.

Yes. All our Instructors are internationally accredited and recognized by the ITF and at least first degree black belt level under supervision of Master Bert G v Pittius.

Yes, you should make the Instructor aware. When you join up you will fill out an application form that will ask you to list any medical or psychological conditions. This will assist the instructor in having a better understanding of how to better serve our members.

When you first begin, just wear comfortable clothing. Trackpants and t-shirt is fine. Our Instructors will guide you with regards to when you need to get a uniform. All the necessary equipment needed to maximize your training will be available from our instructors.

Taekwon-Do ITF students must pass a grading to earn a higher rank. These gradings are internationally recognized and are held approximately every  three to four months depending on the instructor’s discretion. Children under 12 can take part in our Kids Program, and have a modified ranking system.

Children are taught that Taekwon-Do is not about violence – but instead about developing skills they can use safely in a tough situation. Any aggression the child brings in to the program usually disappears with continued training and increased self-esteem. We emphasise the tenets of Taekwon-Do, in particular courtesy and self control.

We typically admit students from age seven and up. We find that many students younger than seven tend to copy and mimic rather than learn. This approach sticks with them and as the techniques become more complicated they become frustrated and quit. Although we have admitted students younger than seven, this is at the discretion of the instructor following an evaluation following two trial classes. As for a maximum age, as long as your physician has cleared you for physical activity, we have no age limit!

If the patterns and overall theory taught in the style you previously studied are in line with our training, this is possible and has been done before. You will need your previous instructor’s contact information as well as your current rank certificate. After our Master Instructor performs an evaluation of your technical level, he will let you know your options.

We stress no contact for beginners. Higher belts may be allowed to make light, touch contact, if agreed on and with the use of the proper Safety Equipment.  Students learn sparring at a gradual but effective pace. The level of contact is appropriate for the age and ability of the student. The safety of our students comes first and foremost. Injury is actually very uncommon in this Martial Art, likely due to the control of the techniques that is stressed. In our nearly 40 years of teaching, our students have had very few injuries. However as the level of skill increase so does the level of contact, but always controlled.

My daughter always wanted to do a Martial Art. The hard work and dedication Master Bert puts in when training with his students, helped my daughter physically improved her strength, mentally it gave her confidence, emotionally she started believing more in herself. Have you ever had that one teacher that understood you? Master Bert is the kind of instructor that greets you when you come in and asks how you are doing, he always makes a joke or two but he knows when it time to be serious, he truly is one of the best instructors I’ve seen… He cares about his student and these days you don’t get that anymore…

My daughter was here for one class. The following happened. Smile from ear to ear when she got home. ‘At last I feel that I’m good at something’ her words that evening. This was the first class. Can’t wait for the reactions after the next classes.

A more caring and encouraging teacher/instructor I am yet to meet. Taekwon-do Master Bert overflows with words of encouragement and kindness for his students. Not exactly what you expect when sending them to train in martial arts. Both my boys absolutely adore him and are committed to mastering this art. After class he sits on the floor with them to teach some valuable life lessons like the meaning of their mantra, Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Indomitable Spirit and Self-Control. It is clear to see that his classes are a project of love and passion and I look forward to the longterm results his positive impact will have on my sons.

To all parents out there who are considering a martial art for the kids or themselves OR the whole family for that matter, the most important factor to consider is the COACH, his coaching style and the coaching environment. There are many styles / types of martial arts to choose from, all have benefits…that’s a fact. However from personal experience the right Coach is what keeps the students engaged, motivated and committed more than anything else. You will have to look very hard to find a Coach like Master Bert, period. Two of my kids had the privilege to train with him. Go have a look experience it for yourself. BTW there are not many Masters in S.A it truly is a privilege to train with someone of that caliber and experience.
